Sometimes things don’t come out according to plan. My latest attempt at water marbling is a prime example.

I’ve never had carrageenan set so poorly. My guess is there’s something in the water interfering with its ability to gel. I’ll use distilled next time.

And my alum. …well. I might as well have not used an alum bath. I did get my paint to float as it should, but the result when I tried to pull prints was… paint running in carrageenan-filled clumps down the sides of my paper. New alum, double check ratios, better luck next time.

But, sometimes failures do come out pretty.

Critique morning.
Well. The lower tension setting prevented paper lamination, but I think I need the higher setting for a better print. I lost a LOT of detail. Also out of white ink, so I couldn’t blend the shading I started on the skull. BUT I do like this plate a lot, and will definitely work with it more.

Collograph plate I’m quite proud of. It’s set up to do a monoprint directly on top of the intaglio.
Good thing I did a test print, though! It laminated BAD.
We’re not sure if tension was too high on the press, or if my paper was just too soft. I’ve used the paper for printing before, albeit with drypojnt.
I’m going to let my plate dry and try again.
