I know this isn’t art, and I’m sorry, but bear with me. I thought it was worth sharing.
“If you’re paying less than $100 per picture, try to keep in mind that you’re not paying the artist enough for their time to realistically live on.”
I’ve delt with so many people saying I overcharge recently, when I don’t even price my shaded sketches over $20…
…when I make less than $3/hr for most of my work.
…and when I’m trying to pay my way through college, and there’s a LOT scholarships don’t cover.
I know this post is on the furry community and furry art prices specifically, but you can take the word ‘furry’ out and replace it with virtually any subculture, community, fandom, etc that there is. Let’s try replaying furry with ‘anime’ for a moment. Now, I’m not active in the anime fandom anymore. There is one anime convention in my state that I periodically go to as I can afford it. I haven’t attended in years. Unless the majority of the people that go to said convention have undergone a radical personality shift in the past three years (the last time I attended,) I can safely say that, assuming said convention is representative of anime fans as a whole, this same attitude is present across the anime fandom.
I’ve seen artists heckled for print prices, when they’re BARELY making back what they paid to have the prints made, let alone the initial time to make the artwork, and any profit they made at the end of the day is BARELY enough to pay back the costs of going to the convention, hotel fees, and food for the stay at the con. Many say they just want to break even so they can enjoy themselves…
…while stuck in a booth all day catering to whiny brats.
